Guard your heart, for from it flows the springs of life- Proverbs 4:23.

I sat down today to spend some time learning about God and what it means to go deeper in a relationship with God. I had left my house to avoid distractions and found myself next to a small creek. After listening to some worship music for a few minutes, the Lord began to reveal how my walk with Him was similar to a creek. It had two parts:


The first part was that if you dip your finger into cool water, you don't realize the temperature or texture change until a few moments after you place your finger tip in the water. Often times change happens in your life, and you don't realize it until after it's been there for a bit. I've been thinking that I want so badly for this split second miraculous touch from God, only to realize that it's already been made simply by me wanting it, and the change is simply manifesting itself over time.

The second is longer and a bit more involved: All flowing water comes from one place and flows to another. For the sake of the metaphor we are talking about a mountain spring that feeds down from spring, to creek, to brook, to river, to ocean. Here it is:

Every time you look at a creek you see water, and the water all looks the same. Be that as it may, every point along that creek feeds from higher ground. Once you reach the highest point along the water path you reach the source of the water: the spring. Its then that the water no longer comes from up, but from deep within, and as it comes from deeper in the ground, it becomes cooler and cleaner.

The Lord began to dissect this metaphor for me, into many different facets.

When you begin to walk with the Lord, he calls you higher up and a lot of that is surface work on your faith, learning to follow what God asks of you, learning to fall in love with Jesus, but once you hit as high as you can go in your surface walk with the Lord, He no longer calls you up, but He calls you deep. He goes into the wellsprings of your life: your heart. It's no longer something you just believe but something you sing, and just like a mountain spring, he begins to call forth things from you that you never thought you could give. Living water flows out of your heart. Things like love and gentleness, kindness; they all manifest themselves as God continues to reach into the deepest corners of your heart. That water of life that comes out of the deepest places of you then begins to flow. They travel, trickle, descend. It begins shallow; it flows down that mountain of your life and begins to flow from one place to another. Just like a stream each place it reaches is deeper. Much like how you affect others. No friendship begins with a sky dive into their thoughts and trials. It begins on the surface, they learn to trust you. And with each new twist and turn in the relationship that living water reaches deeper into them. At any point they can look behind where you have come from and see only a mountain spring coming from deep within brought forth by the Creator. Eventually… the life you live in front of them, the living water you poor over them hits their ocean (if they let you get that far), and its something totally deeper where your life and theirs meld together and what you speak into their life is so powerful and they have let you run deep enough into them that they trust you completely. Its then that they can really look back, see all that way you've come, just to show them the love of God. The paths traveled have become a road from deep within you to deep within another made possible through Jesus Christ

Jesus had a lot to say about relationships. His whole purpose in life was to mend a broken relationship: The only relationship that matters. He flowed from deep to deep.

One sentence that has been percolating in the back of my mind… all summer has been "Your wells run deep." I was really questioning what that means but I think… I understand it now. God has shown me a new level of His love, it's overwhelmed me. It's almost like He's been filling that wellspring in my heart to overflowing, but the cavern runs deep and its taken a lot of time for it to reach my surface and to begin to bubble into the lives of others. But I think it's more than that. I think it's a promise. Because God... has reached deep in me and I have been drawing from deep within Him, and He has brought forth this … water. So that His love…. Now overflows from my wellsprings... onto others.


[Lord, let our hearts be a wellspring of living water to others. Let Your love penetrate the hardest of hearts, and use us as an instrument of your will. We love you, Lord. Amen]
